10 Needlepoint Tips

1. If you are having trouble threading your needle, try turning it around. One side of the eye can be rougher than the other making it harder to thread.
2. Thread your needle before you cut your thread or yarn from the spool, pull it out to the length you need then cut and stitch.
3. It can be easier to sew different colors with different needles. Save yourself some time by using different needles, keeping you from having to re-thread over and over.
4. Hold all of a canvas’s loose fibers by stitching 1/3 of the edge under on a sewing machine.
5. Or, prevent unraveling of edges by using an all purpose household glue. Apply to the edges of your needlepoint canvas and allow to dry, leaving room to cut it off later.
6. Keep your needlepoint canvas, scissors, needles, threads and all of the other items you need to design and stitch together so you can easily pick it all up and take it with you when you will have a little extra available time like long trips or appointments where you will be waiting. Use a nice tote bag for example, even a large Ziploc baggie works well. Never be bored with your needlepoint crafts always at hand.
7. If you are using a hoop, remember to remove the canvas from the hoop each time you are finished working to prevent the fabric from becoming distorted.
8. Remember that the best way to avoid having to clean your needlepoint crafts is to prevent them from getting dirty. Just use a little caution and common sense will keep your work safe from grunge, oily skin, etc. You want to avoid having to use cleaning fluids that can cause bleeding.
9. If you have stitched to the last of a thread, bury it by looping another piece of thread in your neelde and sliding it under the stitching while catching the loose tail in the loop. Pull it under the stitched thread, and be careful not to distort the holes where the thread is going.
10. Tension can be hard to learn, but you will eventually get the feel for it. Practice will teach you not to stitch too tight, distorting the canvas and not too loose which will make it lumpy. Needlepoint is very fun and relaxing, but remember to stay at least a little focused!
